FLIR IdentiFINDER 2 NG Operation

Remove the USB connector by pulling the connector toward the bottom of the instrument.

Always use safety strap to minimize potential damage to the instrument.

Hold down the power button until the start-up screen appears in the display.

Dose Rate screen indicates that the instrument is ready.

If only two bars are visible in the icon located in the upper left hand corner, remaining battery time is less than 60 minutes.

The instrument should be located in an environment similar to the area being surveyed (e.g., outside, adjacent to inspection area), but far enough from item of interest to minimize any effects on the background measurement.

Upon entering Finder mode, the instrument will collect a background for 10 seconds.

Once the background is collected, the instrument is ready to search for radioactive sources.

Move instrument slowly at approximately 20 cm per second. Maintain a distance of less than 10 cm from survey area without making contact.

Listen for audible indicators, observe display screen (graph, dose rate, counts per second) and alarm lights to determine distribution of radiation.

Use the “crosshair” technique to find the highest level of radiation.

Place a marker (tape, pencil, etc.) on points exhibiting elevated radiation. There may be more than one point of interest.

Document the distribution of radiation, location(s) of concentrated radiation levels, and approximate radiation levels observed at all locations.

Perform identification at each location previously marked for investigation.

Place the instrument close without making contact.

Press M to enter Identify mode from either Dose Rate or Finder mode.

Optimal identification measurements are obtained when the signal bar is located between the right and left arrows on the screen.

If “Insufficient counts” message is displayed press M to continue measurement.

Hold the instrument steady and as close as possible to the measurement location until the measurement is complete (typically 120 seconds).

Once completed, the following information will be displayed:

1. Confidence value: 4 (low) through 10 (high)

2. Isotope name (e.g. Co-57)

3. Isotope category

• IND – Industrial Isotope

• MED – Medical Isotope

• NUC – Special Nuclear Material

• NORM – Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material

• Annihilation radiation – produced by isotopes used in some medical scans

If the result is unexpected, move away from the source and recalibrate by powering the identiFINDER 2 off and on. Repeat identification.

If the identiFINDER 2 cannot find a match in the library, the instrument will display “Unk” (unknown).
